Iraq proposes reviving Iran-Gulf talks, offers to host

Iraq has proposed reviving regional dialogue by hosting talks involving the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC), Iraq and Iran.

Axar.az reports, citing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iraq, that Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein made the remarks after meeting Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Baghdad on Sunday.

Hussein said the ministers discussed regional developments, U.S.-Iran negotiations, the Strait of Hormuz and efforts to end the conflict in the region.

"Security in the region must be the responsibility of the countries of the region," Hussein said, adding that Iraq is ready to host representatives of the GCC states, Iraq and Iran to conduct talks.

"Iraq is ready to host representatives of these countries for talks aimed at strengthening regional security and stability and protecting the interests of the region's peoples," Hussein said.

Hussein also said Iraq maintains strong relations with both the United States and Iran and is prepared to work with both sides to help end the war.

Araghchi welcomed the proposal, saying the recent conflict underscored the need for a new regional security framework.

"The recent war had provided important lessons for the countries of the region and highlighted the need to reconsider the regional security system and establish a new, comprehensive framework involving all regional states," he said.
