Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken has rejected renewed calls to use frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine, saying the issue is non-negotiable and the door is closed.

Axar.az reports, citing Euractiv, that Sweden, Poland, the Netherlands and Spain this week urged the European Commission to explore ways to use around €200 billion in immobilized Russian assets for Ukraine.

"This issue is not even being discussed. This door is closed," Francken said.

Most of the assets are held at Euroclear in Belgium. Francken said Prime Minister Bart De Wever would maintain Belgium’s opposition, citing the risk of Russian legal retaliation.

EU foreign ministers are expected to discuss the issue in Ireland next week.
