Merz speaks with Trump over proposed Russia deal

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz spoke by phone with US President Donald Trump overnight following Trump's announcement of a possible major agreement with Russia on Ukraine and Europe.

Axar.az reports, citing N-TV, that German government spokesman Stefan Kornelius said Merz was involved in Trump's considerations, stressing that negotiations on European security and peace in Ukraine would require European participation.

Kornelius said Berlin and Washington shared four principles, including ending the war in Ukraine, reaching an agreement on all issues together, securing NATO allies' approval and ensuring Europe's participation in discussions affecting its security.

He also referred to Ukraine-related talks scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi next week, saying Germany was closely coordinating with its European partners.
