Giorgi Baramidze, one of the leaders of Georgia’s opposition United National Movement party, has been remanded in custody for two months after being charged with treason and sabotage.

Axar.az reports, citing local media, that the Tbilisi City Court made the decision following a motion by Georgia’s Prosecutor General’s Office.

It should be noted that Baramidze was detained at his home yesterday. If found guilty, he faces up to four years in prison.

Baramidze was a prominent politician during the presidency of Mikheil Saakashvili. He served as interior minister in 2003-2004 and defense minister in 2004. He later served as state minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration and as deputy prime minister of Georgia from 2006 to 2012.

After the Georgian Dream party came to power, he continued his political career in the opposition and served as a member of the Georgian parliament from 2012 to 2016.
