China evacuates thousands as Typhoon Champi approaches

The approach of Typhoon Champi has prompted authorities in eastern China’s coastal regions to take precautionary measures, including evacuations and the suspension of ferry services.

Axar.az reports, citing foreign media, that 62,400 people have been evacuated in Shanghai, which has been affected by strong winds and heavy rainfall brought by the typhoon.

In the Zhejiang province cities of Zhoushan and Yuhuan, beaches have been closed, tourists moved away from coastal areas and offshore operations suspended to protect against large waves. Local authorities said waves reached heights of up to nine metres in some areas.

Although Typhoon Champi has weakened, precautionary measures remain in place. A further 11,500 people have been evacuated from coastal communities in Zhoushan.
