Azerbaijani sailor and Russian captain jailed in Finland

The captain and bosun of the Fitburg have been sentenced to prison in Finland for violating cable-laying regulations.

Axar.az reports, citing Оxu.az, that the Helsinki District Court found two crew members of the Fitburg guilty of damaging underwater cables in an incident in the Gulf of Finland on New Year's Eve.

Russian captain Andrey Maksimenko was sentenced to three years and six months in prison, while Azerbaijani sailor Vusal Majidov received a sentence of two years and 10 months for aggravated sabotage. Both men were ordered to be taken into custody immediately.

They were also ordered to compensate the victims for the costs of repairing and inspecting the damaged cables and gas pipeline.

It should be noted that an underwater telecommunications cable between Estonia and Finland was damaged in the Gulf of Finland on December 31, 2025.

The Finnish Border Guard detained the vessel Fitburg, suspected of damaging the cable, along with its 14 crew members. The crew included citizens of Russia, Georgia, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan.
