As a result of the municipal elections held in Turkiye on March 31, the opposition Republican People's Party (RPP) retained control of Ankara, Istanbul, Izmir, and Antalya and won in Bursa and took control of the 5 largest provinces of Turkiye.

Axar.az reports that the CHP won an election for the first time in 47 years with 37.74 per cent of the votes. RPP came second for the first time since its establishment in 2001 with 35.5 per cent of votes.

The second biggest event in this election is the JDP's capture of many provinces after many years.

In Adıyaman, which has been ruled by the RPP since 2004, JDP candidate Abdurrahman Tutdera won with 49.74 per cent of votes.

One of the most surprising results was recorded in Balikesir. JDP candidate Ahmet Akin won here by receiving 51.1 per cent of the votes. CHP thus won in Balıkesir for the first time since 1950.

JDP candidate Ahmet Onal was elected as the mayor of Kirigkala with 49.9 per cent of the votes. This is the first victory of the JDP since Kirıggala became a province in 1989.

JDP won in Kilis for the first time. The candidate of the party, Hakan Bilecen, received 41.97 per cent of votes and was elected mayor. It should be recalled that in 2014 CHP collected 3 percent of votes in this province.

One of the biggest defeats of RPP was losing Bursa. The province, which has been under the control of the RPP since 2004, went to the CHP in the last election. RPP candidate Mustafa Bozbey was elected mayor with 47.6 per cent of votes.
