236 thousand people drown in the world every year - UN

July 25 is World Drowning Prevention Day.

Axar.az reports that on this occasion, in the UN press release, it is pointed out that approximately 236,000 people drown in water every year. The organization notes that these tragedies are becoming a major public health problem in the world. Drowning is one of the leading causes of death among children and youth aged 1-24 worldwide.

The UN notes that more than 90 percent of accidental drowning deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. More than half of drownings worldwide occur in the Western Pacific and Southeast Asian regions. These tragedies are highest in the Western Pacific region and are 27-32 times higher than those observed in Great Britain and Germany, respectively.

World Drowning Prevention Day, declared in April 2021 by UN General Assembly resolution A/RES/75/273, is celebrated annually on July 25. This global advocacy event serves as an opportunity to highlight the tragic and profound impact of drowning on families and communities, and to propose life-saving solutions to prevent it.
