Journalist and activist Kianush Sanjari committed suicide in protest against government repression of activists.

Axar.az informs that human rights organizations reported this incident.

“If Fatemeh Sepehri, Nasrin Shakarmi, Tomaj Salehi, and Arsham Rezaei are not released by Wednesday evening, I will end my life in protest against the dictatorship of Ali Khamenei and his allies,” Kianush Sanjari warned in a post on his social media account just hours before his suicide.

It should be noted that Sanjari was first arrested in 2000 at the age of 17 for participating in a protest and was held in solitary confinement for several months.

He was subsequently arrested nine more times on charges of "propaganda against the government," "undermining national security," "membership in the student movement," and other accusations.

Due to pressure, Kianush Sanjari left the country in the summer of 2008 and lived in the U.S. for eight years before returning to Iran in October 2016.
