Protesters in Bangladesh demolished the historic residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country’s founding father, ahead of a planned speech by his daughter, ousted leader Sheikh Hasina.
Axar.az, citing Independent, reports that thousands participated in a “bulldozer procession” in Dhaka on Wednesday night, storming the house with sticks and tools before setting the upper floor on fire. By midnight, excavators had razed parts of the building.
Hasina, speaking via Facebook from exile in India, condemned the attack, accusing the interim government of trying to erase history. The Dhaka-based International Crimes Tribunal has banned the broadcast of her speeches, and student leader Hasnat Abdullah warned media outlets against publishing them.
Hasina, 77, fled to India on August 5 after mass protests against public sector job quotas escalated into deadly clashes, leading to her removal. The Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus-led interim government, formed after student uprisings, has accused her of suppressing dissent, with reports of 1,500 protester deaths and 3,500 abductions under her rule. The current government is now seeking Hasina’s extradition from India to face trial for alleged crimes against humanity.
