At least 49 passengers were killed and 22 others wounded after a passenger aircraft of a private Bangladeshi airline skidded off the runway and caught fire in capital Kathmandu Monday, police said.
Police spokesman Manoj Neupane said emergency workers recovered 40 dead bodies from the aircraft while nine others died after they were taken to hospitals in Kathmandu.
Neupane said the emergency workers had called off the search at the site since all passengers had been accounted for.
“But we will be able to identify the dead only tomorrow,” he said.
The US-Bangla airlines plane had arrived in Kathmandu in the afternoon from the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka.
There were 67 passengers and four crew members aboard. According to local media reports, there were 33 Nepalese among them.

A police official says at least 38 people were killed and 23 injured when a plane crashed as it landed at the Kathmandu airport in Nepal.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media, said 10 people remained unaccounted for in Monday's crash.
The plane, a twin-propeller Bombardier Dash 8 flying from Bangladesh, swerved repeatedly before it crashed, landing near the runway.

The Kathmandu Tribune reported that at least seven people had died in the incident with another 18 sustaining injuries. It also reported that 17 people had been rescued and hospitalized.
The Russian Embassy in Nepal said that a total of 80 people were on board of the aircraft.
The airport authorities said that the technical malfunction could have caused the crash.

The Bangladeshi aircraft crashed on Monday near the international airport of Kathmandu when landing, media reported citing airport officials.
According to the Kathmandu Post the aircraft missed the runway and crashed at a football field to the east of the airport. The plane then burst into flames.
It is not known at this time how many passengers were on board the airplane. There is no information about the casualties.
"We seek to control the flames. We are waiting for the details," the airport's representative said.
The videos featuring the alleged crash site are circulating on social media platforms.
