"I do think serious steps can be taken at the meeting on June first in Chisinau between President Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan with the presence of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron. However, the Macron factor should not be forgotten".
Axar.az reports that Matthew Bryza, the former US ambassador to our country, told us about the five-way meeting to be held within the framework of the European Political Union Summit in Chisinau.
"I wish that President Macron didn't feel he had to insert himself into the process. I understand he's playing domestic politics, but he has already expressed his support for Armenia over Azerbaijan. So he is not at all an objective mediator. But it's good that Olaf Scholz will be there because I think he will establish or maintain a balance", he said.
Bryza noted that if Macron attends the meeting, it will not be possible to reach an agreement on signing a peace treaty:
"So hopefully the meeting in Chisinau will help move the process forward and assist the President of Azerbaijan, and the Prime Minister of Armenia to narrow their differences and then lead to a final peace agreement a little bit later with the participation of both Secretary of State, Blinken, maybe President Biden, and European Council President Michel as part of the process".
