Iran's president was expected to attend the COP29 summit in person but reportedly decided against participating due to the presence of an Israeli official at the event.
Axar.az reports that, citing News.am,this claim was made by Fada Hossein Maleki, a member of Iran's Parliament National Security Commission.
Maleki claimed that Azerbaijan had failed to meet its commitments under the Tehran Convention regarding the protection of the Caspian Sea and accused Azerbaijan of allowing "british-zionist companies" to supply energy to Israel, contradicting the principles of neighborly relations and the spirit of the Tehran Convention.
It is important to note that claims about Iranian President Pezeshkian skipping the COP29 Leaders’ Summit due to the participation of Israeli officials are entirely false and hypocritical. The Israeli President's Office had officially announced that Isaac Herzog would visit Azerbaijan during the second week of COP29 (a trip later canceled due to Turkiye not granting airspace access).
Thus, it was already clear that Israeli representatives would not attend the Leaders’ Summit. Moreover, Pezeshkian's attendance at the summit had been officially confirmed. However, he canceled his trip without providing any official explanation.
On the other hand, Iran is the last country that can accuse Azerbaijan of harming the environment. The Islamic Republic has never participated in COP conferences at a high level, has not taken on any commitments, and has not spent a single penny to combat climate change so far.
While Azerbaijan extracts oil from the Caspian Sea using the latest technology, Iran relies on outdated equipment due to sanctions restricting its access to modern technology. How can Iran accuse Azerbaijan of polluting the sea with its oil extraction under such circumstances?
Azerbaijan’s export of its oil to the global market is supposedly against the “principle of neighborliness,” yet Iran’s provision of free weapons, ammunition, rockets, and oil to a Christian enemy next door, all aimed at Azerbaijan, is considered “Shia brotherhood”?
