South Korea will hold a snap presidential election on June 3, following the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol for attempting to impose martial law and subvert civilian authority.
Axar.az, citing France24, reports that Yoon was suspended in December and officially removed last week after the Constitutional Court upheld his impeachment, citing his use of military force for "political purposes."
Acting President Han Duck-soo announced the election date, urging fair and transparent preparations. The winner will be sworn in the next day, unlike regular elections with a transition period.
Opposition leader Lee Jae-myung currently leads the polls with 34% support, while Labour Minister Kim Moon-soo trails at around 9%.
The election comes amid multiple national crises and after South Korea was hit with steep U.S. tariffs. Yoon, now facing a criminal trial for insurrection, is the second president in South Korean history to be impeached by the court.
