Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has sent a letter of condolences to the family of public and political figure Richard Armitage.

Axar.az reports that the letter states:

"We were deeply saddened by the news of the death of Richard Armitage, a prominent statesman, diplomat and public and political figure, a great friend of Azerbaijan.

Richard Armitage has gained great prestige both in the United States and abroad with his long-standing and effective activity in international politics and diplomacy, his rich experience, and his high professionalism. He has made significant contributions to establishing peace, security, and stability in the world, eliminating conflicts and hotbeds of tension, and preventing global threats.

Richard Armitage was a friend of Azerbaijan. He was always treated with respect and sympathy in Azerbaijan. I would like to especially note Richard Armitage's services in developing relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the United States and strengthening our friendly ties. I remember my meetings with him with the most pleasant impressions.

The dear memory of Richard Armitage will always live in our hearts.

I share your grief in these difficult times and send my deepest condolences to you and all members of your family. I offer my condolences."
