Those who claim that the signing of the ceasefire in 1994 was a mistake were not deeply familiar with the situation. They say, “Why did you stop the fighting?” Well, if we hadn’t stopped, would we have advanced all the way to Baku, taken the Azerbaijani leadership hostage, and told them to recognize it?
Axar.az reports that former Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan made these remarks during a meeting with students and faculty at Yerevan State University while speaking about the ceasefire (Bishkek Protocol – ed.) signed with Azerbaijan on May 12, 1994.
According to him, the main issue during military operations is not capturing territory:
“Because to hold and protect those territories later, you must have serious capabilities. Back then, were we capable of expanding the front line two or three times and defending it? Of course not.”
Sargsyan noted that a “representative” of Nagorno-Karabakh also signed that document, and Azerbaijan began to dismantle this “reality,” especially after the April clashes.
