Kuwait summons Iranian envoy over tanker attack

The Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it had summoned Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Toutounchi and handed him a formal note of protest over what it described as Iran's attack on the Kuwaiti tanker Keifan while it was transiting the Strait of Hormuz, which injured several crew members.

Axar.az reports that the statement was published on the official X account of Kuwait's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the ministry, Deputy Foreign Minister Hamad Suleiman Al-Mashaan described the incident as a "blatant attack" that came amid what Kuwait called Iran's ongoing aggression against the country since February 28, 2026, including inflammatory and provocative statements.

The ministry said the attack constituted a flagrant violation of Kuwait's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national interests, threatened the security and freedom of international navigation, and violated international law, the UN Charter, and UN Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026).

Kuwait reiterated its demand that Iran immediately halt its unlawful attacks, stressing that it reserves the right to take all necessary measures and holding Tehran fully responsible for the attack and its continued actions against the State of Kuwait.
