Two years have passed since the terrorist attack at Azerbaijan's embassy in Iran.

Axar.az reports that on January 27, 2023, in the early hours of the morning, a heavily armed attack was carried out on Azerbaijan's embassy in Iran. According to security camera footage, the attacker entered the embassy with weapons, leading to serious incidents.

During the attack, the head of the embassy’s security service, Orkhan Asgarov, lost his life. Two other embassy staff members, Vasif Tagiyev and Mahir Imanov, were injured while while preventing the attack. The terrorist was immediately neutralized and detained.

Orkhan Asgarov was laid to rest at the Second Alley of Martyrs in Azerbaijan and was posthumously awarded the "For Service to Motherland" medal. Vasif Taghiyev was awarded with 1st degree "Rashadat" order and Mahir Imanov was awarded with “For Service to Motherland” medal.

Following the incident, Azerbaijan suspended the activities of its embassy in Tehran, and all staff members and their families were evacuated to Baku.

In 2024, after diplomatic negotiations, Azerbaijan reopened its embassy at a new location in Iran, and the embassy staff resumed their duties.

The perpetrator of the attack, Yasin Huseynzadeh, was sentenced to death by Iranian courts. After the sentence was confirmed, it was sent to the relevant authorities for execution.
