The best guarantee of global security is membership in the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO).

Axar.az reports that this was stated by American diplomat Kurt Volker.

“The best guarantee of security in the world is NATO membership. Putin has never attacked a country that is a member of the Alliance and openly acknowledges its deterrent effect. At the same time, Ukraine’s NATO membership is not currently on the agenda, and it is extremely important not to take steps that could permanently close this option in the future. The appropriate approach for now is simply not to raise the issue and to base discussions on the fact that it is not currently being considered,” he said.

The diplomat also noted that instead, an equivalent model of security guarantees is being discussed:

“This concerns guarantees similar to Article 5; that is, any new attack on Ukraine would be met with a collective military response from all countries participating in this security agreement together with the United States.”

According to Volker, this framework is currently the subject of discussion.
