Trump threatens military action over Diego Garcia base

US President Donald Trump has threatened military action if the presence of the US base on the Mauritian island of Diego Garcia is threatened.

Axar.az reports that he wrote about this on the X social network after a conversation with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

"I understand that the agreement reached by Prime Minister Starmer is, in the opinion of many, the best possible agreement. However, if the lease agreement is ever terminated in the future, or if anyone threatens or endangers US operations and forces at our base, I reserve the right to militarily secure and reinforce the US presence on Diego Garcia," Trump wrote.

Trump stressed that this large, strategically important US military base located in the center of the Indian Ocean is of great importance to the national security of his country.

Note that Diego Garcia is part of the Chagos Archipelago. In May 2025, Great Britain officially transferred sovereignty over the archipelago in the Indian Ocean to Mauritius.
