Japan’s ruling LDP coalition leads in snap election

According to the results of the exit poll conducted by the NHK television channel, the coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi secured a lead in the House of Representatives in the snap parliamentary election in Japan.

Axar.az reports that the voting process for the snap elections ended at 20:00 local time.

The vote counting process is currently underway.

It should be noted that on February 8, a snap parliamentary election was held in Japan. 1,284 candidates competed for 465 seats to be elected to the lower house of parliament. Of the 465 seats in the House of Representatives, 289 must be elected by majority vote, and 176 must be elected proportionally. The ruling LDP went to the election in a coalition with the Japan Innovation Party. To gain a majority in parliament, it is necessary to have at least 233 seats. The LDP, which has been in power in Japan for nearly 70 years, also faced stronger opposition in this election. The party's 26-year coalition partner, the Komeito Party, formed the main opposition bloc in parliament with the opposition Constitutional Democratic Party last October.
