Moscow brushes off US move on oil sanctions waiver

Moscow had anticipated that Washington would not extend the temporary license allowing third countries to purchase Russian oil, but Russia has already learned to minimize the impact of what it calls illegal sanctions, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Axar.az informs that the United States will not be renewing the waivers that allowed purchase of some Iranian and ‌Russian oil without facing U.S. sanctions, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told reporters on Wednesday.

"We will not be renewing the general license on Russian oil, and we will not be renewing the general license on Iranian oil. That was oil that was on the water prior to March 11. So all ‌that has been used," Bessent said at a White House briefing.

“This could have been expected. It was one of the possible scenarios,” he said, commenting on remarks by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that Washington does not plan to extend sanctions exemptions on Russian and Iranian oil held on tankers at sea.

Peskov added that Russia has been living under sanctions for years and has learned to mitigate their effects.
