Ukraine peace talks have 'stagnated,' Rubio says

Negotiations aimed at resolving the Russo-Ukrainian War remain stalled, although the United States says it is still ready to act as a mediator if conditions change.

Axar.az reports, citing The Guardian, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said during a visit to Italy on Friday that American diplomatic efforts to facilitate talks between Russia and Ukraine have so far not produced a successful outcome.

“We’ve tried to play a mediator role in that so far, it has not led to a fruitful outcome for a variety of reasons. We remain prepared to play that role if it can be productive,” Rubio said, adding that the U.S. does not want to “waste time and energy on an effort that’s not moving forward.”

He described the war as “a tragedy,” noting that both sides are paying “very heavy prices” economically and in human terms.

“We’re prepared to play whatever role we can to bring it to a peaceful diplomatic resolution; unfortunately … those efforts have stagnated, but we always stand ready if those circumstances change,” he added.
