Drone strike damages Chornobyl Nuclear Storage Facility

A Russian drone strike overnight on June 7 damaged part of the Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility in Ukraine’s Chornobyl Exclusion Zone.

Axar.az informs that according to state nuclear operator Energoatom, the attack took place at around 2:10 a.m. local time and comes amid heightened concerns over nuclear safety in Ukraine, as Russian forces continue targeting energy and nuclear-related infrastructure.

Energoatom said the strike partially destroyed the facility’s container reception building. No spent nuclear fuel was present at the site at the time of the attack.

Following the impact, a fire covering about 40 square meters (430 square feet) broke out but was later extinguished. No injuries were reported, and radiation levels in the area remain within normal limits, the company added.
