Pakistan, Qatar seek to revive US-Iran talks

Regional sources have confirmed to CNN that Pakistan and Qatar are working to bring the US and Iran back to the negotiating table.

Axar.az reports that according to publication, Pakistan and Qatar were the key mediators in previous negotiations held in Switzerland, which ultimately led to the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed in mid-June. Oman also helped facilitate earlier rounds of diplomatic talks.

On Wednesday night, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on all parties to exercise restraint and “refrain from any actions that may further undermine regional peace and stability.”

“There is no alternative to continued engagement, dialogue and diplomacy to achieve shared goal of peace in the region,” the ministry said in a statement. “Pakistan urges all sides to uphold their respective commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which remains an enduring foundation for understanding, mutual respect and shared prosperity for the region and beyond.”

It should be noted that U.S. strikes on Iran resumed overnight on July 8. U.S. President Donald Trump later announced that the ceasefire with Iran had been suspended.
