Turkish troops are set to be deployed at the Abu al-Duhur military airbase in Syria’s Idlib province, which was targeted by Israeli Air Force strikes.
Axar.az reports, citing Turkish media, that renovation work was carried out at the Abu al-Duhur base following the December 8, 2024 coup. The facilities at the base were repaired by the Syrian government, while the airport runway was renovated by Turkiye. In line with an agreement reached between the two countries, the deployment of air defense equipment, mainly reconnaissance and attack drones, has begun at the base.
Following a series of military exercises held in Turkiye, all preparations had been completed for the deployment of military personnel, ground equipment and aircraft at the base. Had it not been for Israel’s midnight attack, more than 200 soldiers would have been sent to the base within 13 hours.
It was reported that following the deployment of Turkish troops, operations targeting ISIS groups, particularly in the Palmyra-Homs area, would have been launched using drones stationed at the base.
According to sources cited by the publication, if Turkish troops had been stationed at the Abu al-Duhur base, there would have been a large number of casualties.
It should be noted that yesterday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said they would not allow Turkiye to establish a military base in Syria.
