EU summons Russian envoy over Romanian airspace violation

The European Union has summoned Russia's chargé d'affaires in Brussels after Russian drones entered Romania's airspace last week, condemning the incident as a serious escalation.

Axar.az reports, citing Romanian news portal Stirile Pro TV, that a spokesperson for EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Tuesday.

"We conveyed our strong condemnation of the deliberate violation of Romania's airspace by Russian drones," the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson described the incident as "a reckless act" and "a serious, very serious escalation by Russia that threatens the security of EU citizens, regional stability and international peace."

Kallas has also proposed additional EU sanctions against Russia over the airspace incursions, as well as for a Russian attack that damaged Latvia's honorary consulate in eastern Ukraine.

The spokesperson said Romania and Latvia "have our full solidarity and support."
