Protesters in Kyiv call for Mayor Klitschko to step down

Residents of Kyiv, Ukraine, gathered outside the city council on October 17, demanding the resignation of Mayor Vitali Klitschko over the city’s preparations for the coming winter.

Axar.az reports, citing Ukrainian media, that hundreds of protesters chanted “Kyiv without Klitschko” during the demonstration in central Kyiv.

Protesters cited the city’s inadequate preparations for winter amid Russian attacks on critical infrastructure, as well as broader concerns over municipal management.

The demonstration comes as Russia intensifies attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, while Kyiv faces challenges in ensuring reliable access to essential utilities and providing adequate shelter.

Protesters held cardboard signs reading “Where are the shelters?”, “Resign” and “12 years of irresponsibility.” Others called on Klitschko to “leave Kyiv,” mocking his recent advice that residents consider relocating ahead of a difficult winter.

It should be noted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously criticized Klitschko, saying Kyiv was less prepared for winter than other regions, particularly when it came to the readiness of critical infrastructure.
