Over 100,000 join youth-led protests across Germany

More than 100,000 people took part in youth-led demonstrations across Germany on Saturday, according to organizers, who hailed the protests as a success despite scattered clashes with police in several cities after the main rallies ended.

Axar.az reports, citing dpa International, that around 100,000 people took to the streets today to make their voices heard.

“Today, 100,000 people showed what they are taking to the streets for,” said Amadeo, a spokesperson for the “Gen Z regelt” (Gen Z Takes Charge) initiative, who gave only his first name.

Shortly before 8 pm (1900 GMT), the group reported more than 100,000 participants nationwide, with figures from six to eight cities still outstanding.

Amadeo said the demonstrations were only the beginning, with the initiative planning to mobilize young people again in three weeks.

"For us, this is just the first step. We want to take part in the Europe-wide protests on November 20," he told dpa.

The initiative had called for peaceful demonstrations in more than 30 German cities, with demands ranging from increased funding for schools, addiction treatment and psychotherapy to measures against rising living costs, greater social justice and stronger action on climate change.

It also opposes the introduction of compulsory military service and expanded government surveillance.

The main demonstrations remained largely peaceful, but scattered skirmishes with police broke out as evening fell. Officers were injured in Frankfurt, bottles, eggs and firecrackers were thrown in Berlin, and plastic barricades were set alight in Hamburg. Police deployed water cannon in several cities.

"What happened after the rallies ended was beyond our control," Amadeo said.
