The Russian Ministry of Defense and the Russian Geographical Society (RGS) have launched a joint expedition to search for sunken ships dating back to the period before Peter I in the Caspian Sea.
Axar.az reports that this information was provided by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
"The Navigation and Oceanography Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, the Russian Geographical Society, and the 'Sea People' Foundation have started the second stage of a joint expedition called 'Maritime History and Cultural Heritage of the Caspian Sea' in the waters of the Caspian Sea near the port of Derbent," the military institution stated.
It is reported that during the expedition, research will focus on exploring certain medieval wrecks. Over the course of two weeks, expedition members will conduct hydrographic surveys in various areas of the seabed in the waters of the Derbent port.
It is possible that the search area may contain sunken ships from the period before Peter I and underwater residential areas and marine infrastructure from the medieval era.
