Kazakhstan to lead Nuclear Plant Consortium

Kazakhstan will be the main operator of the consortium for the construction of the nuclear power plant (NPP).

Axar.az reports that the President of Kazakhstan Gasim-Jomart Tokayev said this while answering the question about which companies will be preferred in the consortium for the construction of the NPP.

According to him, this issue was discussed during the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Astana:

"We were talking about the possible participation of the Rosatom company, which has high competence and rich experience in the construction of nuclear power plants abroad. Also, taking into account China's great success in the construction of civilian nuclear facilities, negotiations are underway with the Chinese company. Other foreign corporations, including Western companies, are also interested. ".

The head of state added that competition procedures will be held this year, after which the government will make a final decision:

"I am sure that Kazakhstan needs a large and powerful nuclear power plant. In addition, I do not rule out that shortly we will start the construction of a second or even a third nuclear power plant. The nuclear industry will give a strong impetus to the development of our economy, which is facing a shortage of energy. I believe that Kazakhstan has developed nuclear energy. it should become a country. It has a great future."
