In a devastating bus accident that took place early this morning in the Gerandiella area at Kotmale in Sri Lanka, 21 people have lost lives with over 35 injured.

Axar.az reports, citing foreign media, the private bus carrying dozens of Buddhist pilgrims plunged into a ravine after skidding off a winding, rain-slicked road.

It was carrying around 70 passengers -- about 20 more than its capacity -- police said.

Police added that initial findings point to speeding and treacherous road conditions as possible causes. Investigators are also probing mechanical failure or driver negligence.

Rescue efforts by police, emergency services, and villagers continued for hours to extricate victims from the wreckage.

The Road Development Authority will inspect the site for safety lapses. This marks one of Sri Lanka’s worst road accidents in recent months, renewing calls for stricter transport safety enforcement.
