Russia awaits Armenia's approval for Kapan consulate

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova announced that they are awaiting a response from the Armenian authorities regarding the opening of a Russian consulate in the city of Kapan in the Zangezur region. This announcement stems from Russia's expectation that Armenia would quickly agree and facilitate the consulate's opening. However, official Yerevan has yet to give its consent.

Axar.az informs that the Armenian outlet Hraparak reported that Yerevan is "getting on the Kremlin’s nerves," neither rejecting nor agreeing to the proposal.

Political analyst Suren Surenyants called Armenia's stance puzzling:
"Armenia should be interested in having consular services from various countries in Kapan or other areas of Zangezur, as it contributes to strengthening security components. The lack of agreement must be seen in the context of the current crisis in Armenia-Russia relations."

It is worth noting that Armenia had quickly granted a similar approval to Iran, and an Iranian consulate is already operating in Kapan.
