The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, addressed the process of signing the agreed peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Axar.az informs according to Armenian media, he stated this in an interview with First Channel.
In response to the question of how the Council of Europe can ensure the implementation of this decision, Berset said:
“We have been interested in this topic for a long time. I spoke with Prime Minister Pashinyan very early, from the moment the terms of the agreement were accepted by Armenia. I have also had the opportunity to speak with Azerbaijani authorities, saying: we want to move forward on this issue, you are also interested in having clarity and stability, and Armenia has taken a very important step in this direction.”
“I believe that the Council of Europe also plays a role by offering a platform for dialogue on these issues. For example, I was recently in Turkiye, where this topic is also relevant as Armenia’s neighbor. In Turkiye, I also spoke about the need for the rapid signing of the peace agreement.
One of the risks is that this discussion might be very important in the Caucasus but could be somewhat forgotten in the world. Our goal is to remind everyone of its importance, continue advancing the discussions, and ultimately reach a final point by applying friendly pressure on Azerbaijan, if I may put it that way.”
“There has been considerable progress in recent months. Our problem today is that the process is moving very slowly, but it is moving forward. I would be concerned if everything completely stopped. In other words, we need to maintain this momentum to lead everything toward signing — which I hope will happen as soon as possible,” said the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
