An ex-police officer was caught performing a sex act on a mother in a parked car outside a primary school as she waited for her son.

John Steward, 63, and Kayley Powell, 28, were allegedly seen ‘grinding and thrutching’ on the driver’s seat of the vehicle parked near the school gates.

But when the pair were caught by the headmistress of Springhead Infant and Nursery School in Oldham, Greater Manchester, Powell claimed Steward was her father.

Following the incident, a pastoral carer claims Powell told her if anything suspicious was going on between the pair, she is entitled to because she’s an adult.

Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester heard today the incident took place at 2.50pm while Powell and other parents were on the afternoon school run.

Powell and Steward, both of Oldham, deny outraging public decency.

Melanie Montgomery was about to pick her son when she noticed Powell and Steward in a nearby car.

The parent told the jury: ‘I saw a gentleman and he was moving his arm quite fast and it was obvious that it was between the girl’s legs.

‘She was on the driver’s side and he was on the passenger’s side. They were parked behind me and I was using the rear view mirror to see them.

‘His head was back but her body was moving – that is how I know he was between her legs.

‘It was as if she was asleep she just wasn’t moving but his hand was making her move.’

Melanie said she was concerned for Powell’s welfare after recognising her as a fellow parent and decided to alert the police and the school’s reception.

She added: ‘I was surprised at how I felt – it shocked me.

Later they claimed Steward was leaning over her to release a mechanism for the back seat.

But Maureen Garlick who was collecting her grandchild told the jury: ‘The mechanism isn’t down her trousers.

‘I thought it was incredible that this should be happening outside a primary school at the end of a school day where there would be children around.’

She said there was ‘something not quite right about that rocking’ and added there are always a lot of children around the area at that time.

Ms Kay claimed she then saw Steward ‘visibly shaking’ while smoking a cigarette.

She called Powell into the school who spoke to pastoral care worker Stacey Thomas, who claims Powell said she was lying down in the car resting her eyes.

Stacey Thomas told the court: ‘Kayley just said: “There was nothing going on. Anyway if anything has been going on I am 27, I’m an adult”.’

Ms Thomas added she could see Powell’s underwear ‘over the top of her pants’ and she seemed agitated.
