Today marks International Women’s Day

Today is March 8, International Women’s Day.

Axar.az reports that the day was established in 1910 at the Second International Conference of Socialist Women held in Copenhagen, following a proposal by Clara Zetkin.

Essentially, the day was created as a celebration of women’s solidarity in the struggle for social, political, and economic equality and for their rights. In many countries around the world, March 8 is observed specifically as the day of working women.

The holiday was first celebrated in 1911 in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Denmark, and in 1913 in Russia. In 1975, the United Nations officially declared March 8 as International Women’s Day.

In Azerbaijan, the holiday has been celebrated since 1917.

In 1998, Azerbaijan established the State Committee for Family, Women, and Children Affairs. The country is also represented in the Council of Europe’s Bureau on Women and is a full member of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.

Since 1995, Azerbaijan has been a party to the international convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women.
