U.S. President Donald Trump has once again threatened to raise tariffs on Indian imports in response to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. In a social media post, Trump accused India of profiting from reselling Russian oil on the global market and criticized its lack of concern over the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Axar.az, citing Reuters, reports that India rejected Trump’s comments as “unjustified and unreasonable,” asserting that its oil imports from Russia are based on economic necessity due to global supply disruptions.
India also highlighted that Western nations, including the EU, continue to trade with Russia.
Despite Trump’s threats, Indian officials say they will continue buying Russian oil, citing national interest.
However, some refiners in India have temporarily paused Russian oil purchases due to narrowing discounts and fear of U.S. penalties. Meanwhile, Indian Oil Corp has turned to alternative suppliers like the U.S., Canada, and the Middle East.
