Thousands were evacuated across Spain on Tuesday as wildfires raged amid a heatwave forecast to hit 44°C (112°F) in some regions.
Axar.az, citing AP, reports that a blaze 21 km outside Madrid, which killed one man and scorched over 1,000 hectares, was largely contained by morning, allowing some residents to return.
Fires in Castile and Leon, Castile-La Mancha, Andalusia, and Galicia forced further evacuations, including tourists in Cadiz.
In Portugal, over 700 firefighters battled a major blaze in Trancoso, with smaller fires reported further north. Scientists warn that climate change is intensifying Southern Europe’s heatwaves and wildfire risks, with the continent warming twice as fast as the global average.
