Serbian president proposes early elections by 2026

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has proposed the possibility of ending his term early at the end of 2026 and holding parliamentary and presidential elections simultaneously.

Axar.az reports that the Serbian leader said this in an interview with a local television channel.

“Officially, I have a year and a half left in my mandate, but it will probably be shorter,” Vučić said.

According to him, the country’s leadership is considering holding presidential and parliamentary elections at the same time:

“Most likely, we will hold both presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously. I expect this to happen in December 2026, or perhaps a little earlier,” he stated.

The president emphasized that he does not intend to amend the constitution to run for another term:

“We do not want to change the Constitution, and I have no intention of running for president again.”

Vučić was first elected President of Serbia in 2017 and re-elected for a second term in 2022. His current term is due to end in 2027.
