Slovenia will hold the presidency of the UN Security Council (SC) in December.
Axar.az informs that the US Bureau reports that the monthly work program of the Security Council was presented to journalists by Ambassador Samuel Zbogar, Permanent Representative of Slovenia to the UN and Chairman of the Council for December.
The ambassador said that Slovenia is entering the last month of its two-year membership in the Council with this presidency, and most of the mandated work of the Security Council will be carried out in the first three weeks. Three main events are planned during this period: "There will be an official visit of the members of the Security Council to Syria and Lebanon, which will be the first visit to the Middle East in the last six years and the first visit to Syria in history. In December, a high-level meeting on Afghanistan will be chaired by the Slovenian Foreign Minister, and the third week will be dedicated to the Middle East, with meetings on Yemen, Syria, and Libya."
The diplomat noted that issues related to Africa are also on the agenda during the month. This includes the extension of the mandate of the UN MONUSCO mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Security Council will continue discussions on Ukraine: "The war continues, attacks on civilian infrastructure continue, and the humanitarian situation worsens as winter approaches. Therefore, the Council will continue discussions on Ukraine."
Other scheduled meetings in December include the presentation of the Secretary-General's report on resolution 2231 on Iran (December 13), meetings on Syria, Sudan, Myanmar, and other issues.
