Putin demands NATO halt eastward expansion

Moscow insists on fulfilling the promises made publicly in the 1990s not to expand NATO eastward.

Axar.az reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin said this in an interview with the India Today television channel.

"We do not want anything unusual or unexpected, something that will fall from the sky. We simply insist on the fulfillment of the promises that have already been made to us. These were not invented yesterday. These are promises made to Russia in the 1990s. There is no eastward expansion of NATO; this has been made publicly," Putin said.

The president noted that since then, the alliance has gone through several waves of expansion.
