Nobel laureate arrives in Oslo after 11 months in hiding

Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado made her first public appearance in 11 months after arriving in Oslo early Thursday.

Axar.az, citing Axios, reports that Machado, who has been under a travel ban for a decade and hiding since Nicolás Maduro’s government barred her from running for president, was greeted with loud cheers at the Grand Hotel, where Nobel laureates traditionally stay.

Her arrival came hours after her daughter, Ana Corina Sosa Machado, accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on her behalf.

Reading her mother’s speech, she emphasized that democracy is essential to peace and that Venezuelans have learned the importance of fighting for freedom.

Machado posted videos and photos of the emotional welcome, calling it “the hug that all of Venezuela needs.”
