Georgia’s ex-defense minister faces pretrial detention

Georgia’s former defense minister, Bacho Akhalaia, has been placed under pretrial detention.

Axar.az reports that the decision was made at a closed session of the Tbilisi City Court.

With this decision, the request of the Georgian Prosecutor General’s Office has been granted.

Akhalaia is accused of organizing and leading group violence during an assault on the Georgian presidential palace in Tbilisi on October 4, during municipal elections this year.

For the committed criminal acts, he faces a prison sentence of up to nine years.
