Israel to introduce electronic tagging in West Bank

Israel has approved the use of technological monitoring to enforce movement restriction orders in the West Bank for both Israelis and Palestinians.

Axar.az reports, citing the Israeli military, that the measure is intended to replace administrative detention — the practice of holding terror suspects without charge when authorities believe disclosing evidence could harm national security — after the government last year decided to stop using administrative detention against Jewish suspects.

Under the order, authorities are permitted to require the installation of “technological monitoring measures” on individuals subject to administrative movement restrictions in the West Bank and to monitor compliance with those orders.

The move comes amid efforts to curb a recent rise in settler violence against Palestinians and Israeli Defense Forces troops.

Officials emphasized that violating restraining orders or damaging monitoring equipment constitutes a criminal offense and may result in prosecution.
