The United States plans to move ahead with phase two of its Gaza ceasefire and reconstruction plan without waiting for Hamas to be fully disarmed or for the return of the last Israeli hostage’s remains.
Axar.az, citing Times of Israel, reports that US officials told Israel that while Washington remains committed to both objectives, they will not be set as preconditions for launching the next phase.
Israel has opposed this approach, insisting that Hamas must first return the body of slain Israeli hostage Ran Gvili and surrender its weapons. Meanwhile, the US, together with mediators Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, says Hamas has signaled openness to a gradual disarmament, starting with heavy weapons and a buy-back program for lighter arms.
The Trump administration plans to unveil next week a “Board of Peace” and other bodies to oversee postwar Gaza governance and reconstruction, after earlier delays due to weak international backing. The US is also pushing ahead with plans for a Palestinian technocratic committee to manage Gaza, while excluding the Palestinian Authority from formal leadership roles at Israel’s insistence.
Efforts to form an international stabilization force and advance reconstruction projects continue, though both face diplomatic and logistical challenges. Meanwhile, Hamas has resumed searching for Gvili’s remains, a key unresolved issue that continues to strain the fragile ceasefire.
