Syria recognizes Kurdish rights and language

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa signed a decree declaring the rights of Kurds in the country.

Axar.az reports that according the document, among other things, recognizes the Kurdish language as an official language and can be taught in schools in areas where Kurds make up a significant part of the population.

In addition, the Syrian transitional government undertakes to grant Syrian citizenship to all Kurdish-speaking residents living in the country.

Also, Nowruz is recognized as a state holiday throughout Syria. The document emphasizes that any discrimination based on ethnicity or language is prohibited by law.

It should be noted that Kurds are the second largest ethnic group in Syria, accounting for approximately 10-15% of the population. They live mainly in the northeast of the country, but they also have communities in Damascus, Aleppo and other major Syrian cities.
