The Iraqi parliament will convene on Tuesday to elect a new president and then appoint a prime minister: Nuri al-Maliki is expected to become prime minister after his candidacy is approved by the country's largest Shiite bloc.
Axar.az informs that INA Press reported this.
"As a rule, the post of prime minister is held by a Shiite, the post of parliament speaker is held by a Sunni, and the post of president is held by a Kurd," the report said.
Parliament Speaker Haibat al-Halbusi said on Sunday that the parliament will convene on Tuesday to elect a new president.
After that, the president will have 15 days to approve the prime minister, who is usually nominated by the largest Shiite bloc, which is usually formed through post-election alliances. Yesterday, the Coordination Structure alliance, which consists of Shiite factions, approved former Prime Minister Maliki as the country's next prime minister.
It should be noted that the post of president is usually held by the candidate of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. This year, the rival Kurdistan Democratic Party nominated its own candidate, Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein.
