EU designates Iran’s IRGC as a terrorist organization

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran will be added to the European Union's terrorism blacklist, foreign affairs ministers decided on Thursday.

Axar.az reports citing Euro News, that the European Union has decided to add Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to its terrorism blacklist in response to the violent crackdown on protests in Iran. This designation, approved unanimously by EU foreign ministers, will impose an asset freeze, funding ban, and travel restrictions on all standing IRGC members.

The decision follows pressure from countries like Germany, the Netherlands, and a shift in stance by France, Spain, and Italy. The IRGC is accused of suppressing protests, supplying weapons to Russia, firing missiles at Israel, and supporting armed groups like Hezbollah, Hamas, and Yemen’s Houthis.

This move aligns the EU with the US, Canada, and Australia, which have already labeled the IRGC a terrorist organization. Rеports indicate that over 6,100 people, including 92 children, have been killed in Iran since protests began in December. EU officials stressed that repression cannot go unanswered.
