Car falls through ice on Lake Baikal, killing tourists

A car carrying nine people, including Chinese tourists, fell through the ice on Lake Baikal in Russia’s Irkutsk Region, killing several people.

Axar.az reports, citing TASS, that at around 7:30 a.m. GMT, an off-road vehicle carrying nine people broke through the ice near Cape Khoboy on Lake Baikal.

The vehicle was carrying a group of tourists and the driver. One tourist managed to escape.

According to the regional branch of Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations, the bodies of seven people have been found.

The Olkhon District Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into the incident. The circumstances and causes of the accident are being established.
