Putin’s parade stage-managed display of strategic exhaustion

Putin’s “Victory Parade” was, according to a British military expert, a striking display of Russia’s strategic strain and depletion.

Axar.az reports that this assessment was made by British military expert Hamish de Bretton-Gordon in an article published in The Telegraph.

In his analysis, the expert argued that the May 9 Victory Day parade in Moscow appeared less like a demonstration of triumph and more like an admission of growing military and strategic exhaustion.

“The absence of tanks and significant battlefield hardware was not simply an omission but an admission. A regime that once showcased its military strength to the world was unable to present meaningful armour, missiles, or modern equipment for its most important national spectacle. A handful of ageing aircraft overhead could not conceal the reality that Russia’s military resources are being consumed at an extraordinary rate on the battlefield,” he wrote.

The expert further noted that the reduced scale of the parade, including the reported lack of modern armoured vehicles and reliance on ageing equipment, reflects broader pressures on Russia’s military capabilities amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
